opening doors
Ribble Valley Shopmobility works alongside Opening Doors
The group works to promote equality of access to services, information and opportunities for all people who live, work and visit the Ribble Valley. Access is not just about wheelchair users but concerns Mums with prams, blind and partially sighted people, deaf people - in fact everyone in the community.
'Opening Doors' meets to discuss access issues and produce agendas for action. This may mean lobbying local businesses, the Borough and County Councils and other statutory bodies to achieve its aims. The group is made up of a variety of organisations and individuals and includes representatives from Ribble Valley Borough Council and Lancashire Council, Age Concern, East Lancs. Advocacy, Braile IT, Talking Newspaper, Help Direct and Ribble Valley MS Society. Meetings are usually held at Clitheroe fire station which is accessible for wheelchair users.
A current priority for the group is to identify those groups who suffer problems in accessing any services, for whatever reason, and widen the group's membership and activities accordingly. Members of the group are also happy to come along and look at any new planning applications for public use to check out the suitability of use by disabled people / wheelchair users. If you are interested finding out more about the 'Opening Doors' group and how you can get involved then contact the Chairperson, Simon O'Rourke on 01200 425028.
The next meeting is 14th April 2011 at 2pm at Clitheroe fire station and is open to all members of the public as well as organistaions
